The U.S. is facing a lithium-ion battery shortage with EV growth

As automakers continue to grapple with semiconductor shortages, some experts say the next crisis in the U.S. supply chain could involve lithium-ion batteries.

As companies like GM, Ford, and a number of startups increase their ambitions for electric vehicles, current battery production in the US cannot keep up with demand.

Although the US has a handful of large battery manufacturing facilities, including Tesla’s Gigafactory, which works in partnership with Panasonic, a trade dispute between Korean battery makers LG Chem and SK Innovation threatens the future of a new battery factory in Georgia.
