Interior designer Kelly Behun has just unveiled a new Living Gallery concept that includes a four bedroom apartment completely furnished by Behun herself. The project is located at 1228 Madison Avenue, a luxury building on the Upper East Side designed by Robert AM Stern Architects (RAMSA) and just one block from the Guggenheim Museum and Central Park. The exclusive residential building consists of 14 full-storey apartments and a maisonette penthouse, which is located behind classic details that are typical of an exterior designed by RAMSA. Behun’s award-winning design aesthetic is a perfect complement to the building’s traditional facade as seen in any room where she curated a selection of modern + whimsical furniture, decorations and artwork, much of which is available through 1228madison.com.
I made the interiors warm and elegant, using timeless design elements and rich, tactile materials that are rooted in the language of classical architecture and beautifully reflect the exterior designed by the legendary Robert AM Stern Architects. Every detail in the Living Gallery has been carefully selected to create an environment that feels chic yet cozy.

The Living Gallery is outfitted with furniture that reflects Behun’s eclectic but impeccable taste, including custom-made, collectable, and readily available items such as Herman Miller, Gucci Décor, Wendell Castle, Casey McCafferty, and DLV Designs, as well as ceramics from Dobrinka Salzman, Sunshine Thacker, Paul S. Briggs and Hostler Burrows. In all rooms you can see Behun’s latest lighting collection with Hudson Valley Lighting, new custom carpets in collaboration with The Rug Company and accessories from L’Objet – all available for purchase. “As an addition to my collection for The Rug Company, the Living Gallery has a capsule collection of 4 new carpets designed exclusively for 1228 Madison Ave and offered for sale to the public. The size and color of each rug can be completely customized to suit any room, ”she says.
An avid art collector, Behum has partnered with Mellyn, Dvorkin & Monrow Art Consultants (MDM) to curate a range of artwork to complement the interior. Artists involved in the design include Ricci Albenda, Ellsworth Kelly, Dashiell Manley, Ken Price, Anish Kapoor, Mary Obering, and Rob Wynne, all of which can be consulted on the website.
I am an avid collector of all types of ceramics and I have an admiration for the artists who create them. Sunshine Thacker is one of my newest obsessions. Her modern, playful approach to lighting and furniture contradicts her martial focus and determination to push the boundaries of what sound can do. I used their “timpani” lamp in the great room.
