Jisun Kim’s Poly Series Shows the Potential of Recycled Plastic Bags

Single-use plastic bags are slowly being banned around the world. But as a Korean designer Jisun Kim | Shares, there is beauty in the material when we recycle it. Their Poly Vase is the Lexus Creative Masters 2021 winner, but the Poly series home decor also includes a lamp made from the same material.

The semi-transparent plastic bags gave Kim durability and texture when creating her designs. “I wanted to convey a comfortable feeling through relaxed lines without tension and show the value of craftsmanship that only humans can make,” she says. “I wanted to show people the potential of turning discarded plastic bags into vases with lifelike textures.”

Kim creates the cloth material by layering plastic bags using a hot press molding technique. After that, the design is dimensioned and cut into pieces before each piece is heat bonded. The result is always a three-dimensional polyvase, but each one is different even if the same technique is used. She said, “The unique texture created by melting plastic creates the impression that blood vessels are passing on the surface of the product,” which is an incredible feature of a sustainable product.
