The holidays can get tricky, from gifts to decorating, but thanks to Katie Dunn from, you don’t have to worry Classic thin. Katie shared her simple holiday decorating tips and ways how to fill your home with holiday joy the classic way. Check out how she did it below with the help of The Home Depot.
Hello! Katie Dunn here. Decorating for the Christmas season is a tradition I look forward to every year. There is something nostalgic and happy about the holidays, don’t you think? As soon as the leaves change, I dream of twinkling lights and evergreen plants. This year our son is at an age where the holiday season is pure magic. When it came to decorating, I knew I wanted to stick with the simple but classic Christmas decorations in the living room – with lots of evergreen and subtle reds while staying true to the neutral palette that I love. The home depot had everything i needed to bring my vision to life this year!
Festive living room
Let’s start with the fireplace. The Home Depot was so kind to us this beautiful, pre-lit garland that came adorned with red and gold ornaments. The garland is such a statement in itself that I didn’t feel like I had to add an extra decor to the coat. I am definitely a less is more type of girl.
Next we ordered this beautiful, pre-lit artificial tree. When it arrived I was a little nervous it would be too big for our home but the size is perfect. I’m so impressed with how realistic it is! I know this will illuminate our home for many Christmases to come.
When it came to decorating that treeI wanted to keep it simple. I used classic modern ornaments in muted gold and champagne tones, as well as some reds and greens. These ornaments were exactly what I needed to add to that garland on the fireplace. We hung them up too green ornament hooks that goes well with the tree. For a more modern look, I swapped out a traditional tree skirt Rattan tree collar.
We hung one up from here wreath in each of the two windows. It’s an easy way to add festive greenery, and it can be enjoyed inside and out! Now our neighbors can enjoy the beautiful, warm glow of the twinkling lights in these pre-lit wreaths when they pass.
And finally, we can’t forget the coffee table! I love filling a favorite bowl or dish with Christmas decorations. We had a couple of red ornaments left over after we cut the tree so I put them in a vintage bowl. The muted reds are my favorite and add a more modern twist to the ornaments in a classic ornament style. I love how this simple design element holds it all together.
In my opinion, a house won’t be fully decorated for the holidays if you skip the exterior. Home Depot sent us these adorable ones glowing reindeer because the court and I had the perfect place in mind to exhibit them. To really put the scene in the limelight, I had my husband wrap the trees clear light bulbs. Then he hung bigger C9 lights on the building, and we’ve completed this corner with another pre-lit wreath at the door. When the lights come on in the evening, our garden is transformed into a winter wonderland.
Let’s round up some of my favorite vacation style tips:
- Keep it simple – less is more
- Add green
- Add a pop of color
- Look for ways to tie your space together (like the ornaments in a bowl).
- Have fun with it!
