DUO-HUE by Amelia Ayerst is a unique digital embroidery stitch developed by Ayerst while studying at the Royal College of Art. The multi-layer stitch enables the combination of complementary colors and different stitch densities, creating a noticeable, color-changing effect in textiles when the product moves.
Color has always fascinated me. While studying at RCA, I focused on the nature of color and how my work creates illusions of color. I am interested in how color communicates with people – how it can transport and transform our thoughts and feelings.
– Amelia Ayerst
Ayerst, designer, doer and entrepreneur, finds her sweet spot at the interface of craft and technology. With her commitment to sustainable design, she sees technology as an opportunity to further support her creative process. At DUO-HUE, the focus is on the production of tailor-made, durable and collectable living and lifestyle products.
The DUO-HUE collection includes cushions in various designs, shapes and sizes that are embroidered with the signature stitch. Put together your own color and pattern grid with a variety of available textile floating frames. Or you can choose something larger, like a unique wall hanging, to become the focal point of a room. There’s even a cube-shaped stool embroidered all around.
Ayerst has a penchant for collaboration and has worked with Falmouth-based Francli Craftwear on a limited series of backpacks. Each is made from heavy, rustic army surplus canvas and DUO-HUE embroidery. At the moment she has a few more projects in the works and is looking forward to working with other like-minded craftsmen and brands on product design for the living and lifestyle sector.
