This week’s DMTV Milkshake guest is Caleb Mulvena, partner and creative director of the architecture and design studio Mapos.
Caleb Mulvena grew up in his carpenter’s father’s woodworking studio, and it’s easy to draw a line between this natural, material-rich setting and the Peconic House, a 4,000-square-foot residence built in simple harmony with its surroundings over the coast of Long Islands Peconic Bay. “I think the Peconic House probably reflects my personal taste most closely,” says Mulvena. “It’s very location specific in the way it responds to the website. It’s not just about the object of the building’s architecture, but about the interplay between building and location. It’s modern and warm at the same time – heavily structured, with natural materials. And that’s what it’s about me. “A similar ethos prevails in the Mapos Midtown Manhattan Store 2018 for the Korean beauty brand Innisfree, which combines the brand’s light and lively brand image with the robust, industrial notes of the location.
In this episode of Milkshake we asked Mulvena about his most imaginative toy for children, what he has learned since he founded Mapos 13 years ago and where he is looking for inspiration: “Two words: Donald Judd,” says Mulvena. “He’s the best. I think a lot of architects appreciate his work – his perfect use of materials, proportions and colors. Even as designers – some people might know his furniture work or his work in Marfa, where design is actually at stake. [where] he takes the artist’s hat off a little. “
