La Doyenne is a minimal single family home on the Plateau Mont-Royal, Canada, designed by _naturehumaine. The project is a renovation and extension of a Victorian house built in 1887. The main objective was to build an extension in the building’s back yard that would protect the privacy of the side and rear buildings.
The layout consists of two levels and several floor variants. When entering half a level above street level, the backyard is let into the garden. This intervention was useful in order to create a height offset in relation to neighboring terraces.
A majestic staircase serves as the centerpiece of the house, which has been preserved and restored in its former glory. Two additional stairs have been added – one connects the living room with the dining room, the other a helicoidal staircase that leads to the roof terrace.
